The preparation of the Report on the State of the Environment in Kosovo is based on the Law on Environmental Protection. According to Article 25 of this law, the Government of Kosovo, upon the proposal of the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, submits an Annual Report on the State of the Environment to the Assembly.
The report contains data on: the state of the environment and changes in the environment compared to the previous report, environmental impacts on public health, the state of endangered areas, implementation of the environmental strategy and action plan, measures undertaken for environmental protection, the development of environmental institutions, and the financing of the environmental protection system.
In accordance with the duties and responsibilities of government institutions, the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency is the institution responsible for preparing this document. This annual report presents the state of the environment for 2020, while data from previous years have also been given considerable attention for comparison purposes.
For the preparation of the report, KEPA collected environmental data from monitoring institutions, operators, various enterprises, publications, reports and other sources. The collected data were processed into qualitative environmental information, which is presented in this report.
The presentation of the situation in some environmental sectors is less comprehensive due to a lack of data, insufficient monitoring, an inadequate legal framework, as well as other institutional and management-related aspects.
The main objective of this report is to inform decision-making institutions about the state of the environment in Kosovo, so that the presented data can serve as a basis for developing appropriate environmental policies and for guiding development, planning and strategic investments in sectors that have an impact on the environment, such as: the economy, industry, energy, transport, agriculture, etc.
Previously, the Annual Report on the State of the Environment 2020 was discussed and approved by the Government of Kosovo and the Assembly of Kosovo.
