HMIK Notice on the Emergency Meteorological and Hydrological Situation

20 November 2022

The Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo (HMIK) has issued a notice regarding the emergency meteorological and hydrological situation resulting from the rainfall of recent days.

The HMIK notice states, among other things: “The rainfall that started today, 18 November 2022, is expected to continue over the coming days and intensify from Saturday afternoon, 19 November 2022, until Monday, 21 November 2022, with varying intensity and territorial distribution. The most significant rainfall will occur in several parts of Kosovo, especially in the Dukagjin region (Gjakova, Junik, Deçan, Peja, Istog, Klinë, Malisheva, Rahovec), followed by the northern, central, southern and eastern parts of the country. These rainfall events may create conditions for flash floods, which may cause difficulties and problems, especially in mountainous river flows in the form of rapid torrents, resulting in landslides, blockage of the sewage system and difficulties in traffic.”

According to HMIK data, rainfall exceeding 30 l/m² within 12 hours may cause flooding, problems in all agricultural production activities, traffic disruptions, a risk of landslides, possible injuries to people and damage to property.

HMIK also explains that the production of extraordinary meteorological and hydrological information is based on certified models and official professional forecasts. These include products from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service – EFAS, and the ICON model developed by the German Meteorological Service (DWD – Deutscher Wetterdienst).
