Four Indigenous Breeds Declared Protected

21 September 2023

As part of activities for the protection of biodiversity, specifically fauna, at the initiative of the Institute for Nature Protection, the Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, Mr. Liburn Aliu, issued separate decisions granting protection to four different indigenous rooster breeds.

With the approval of these decisions, the indigenous rooster breeds: Long-Crowing Rooster of Dukagjin, Long-Crowing Rooster of Gjilan, Tricolor Rooster and Speckled Rooster, have been added to the Register of Protected Natural Values, maintained by the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection.

The main purpose of issuing these decisions is to protect the indigenous rooster breeds in accordance with the law and to determine the conditions for their keeping. The decisions also aim to protect these breeds from the risk of genetic mixing with foreign breeds and from the risk of taking these breeds out of the country for the purpose of crossbreeding with other breeds.

The decisions also contain the professional justification for placing the indigenous rooster breeds under protection, as well as a description of their main characteristics, prepared by an inter-institutional working group led by the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection.

The institutional protection of indigenous rooster breeds is also of particular importance because these breeds will now be internationally presented as indigenous breeds of the Republic of Kosovo, thereby also showcasing the richness of the biodiversity values of our country.
