Kosovo’s Invisible Fauna Featured on Postage Stamps

17 April 2026

Kosovo Post continues to promote rare and important species of Kosovo’s biodiversity. This time, the focus of its latest postage stamp issue was “Invisible Fauna in Kosovo – Spiders and Scorpions”. The issue was produced in cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, namely the Department of Biology, and is dedicated to small species of great ecological and scientific importance in Kosovo, such as spiders and scorpions, which mainly inhabit mountainous and rocky areas and forests, living under rocks or in the leaf litter.

Brachythele kosovarica is a terrestrial spider endemic to Kosovo, initially discovered in the village of Veriq (Istog), and also recorded in Mitrovica, Peja, and Prizren. Harpactea dardanica is a spider belonging to the family Dysderidae, discovered in the beech forests of the Accursed Mountains. It mainly lives in the soil layer and beneath leaves, has a secretive lifestyle, and is primarily nocturnal. The name “dardanica” is associated with ancient Dardania, reflecting its historical and geographical connection to the territory of Kosovo. Alpiscorpius dinaricus (Di Caporiacco, 1950) is a small scorpion species endemic to the Western Balkans.

The postage stamps and First Day Cover from this issue will remain in postal circulation until stocks are exhausted. Kosovo Post invites collectors, institutions, and citizens to enrich their collections with these unique stamps, which represent a combination of Kosovo’s scientific and natural values.
