Monitoring Activities for Invasive Species in Kosovo’s Aquatic Ecosystems Continue

22 May 2026

The Institute for Nature Protection has continued its research activities to monitor the invasive species Procambarus clarkii (Louisiana red crayfish) in Kosovo’s aquatic ecosystems.

Following monitoring activities carried out in underground water ecosystems, specifically in Flladi Cave in Panorc, Malisheva, and Radavac Cave, the research continued at Lake Perlepnicë, in areas characterized by slower water flow and conditions suitable for the presence and spread of this invasive species.

During the field activities, samples were collected to analyze the biological and chemical parameters of the water, while monitoring traps were also installed to record and track the presence of this species in aquatic habitats.

This activity is being carried out as part of an international project supported by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), with partner research, speleological and limnological organizations from several European countries, while Kosovo is represented by the Institute for Nature Protection.

The aim of the project is to study the distribution of the Louisiana red crayfish and develop strategies for the management and protection of sensitive habitats through standardized scientific monitoring and strengthened international cooperation in the field of biodiversity conservation and invasive species control.
