This preliminary assessment of endemic fauna species in Kosovo is based on data from scientific literature, the Red Book of Fauna, Administrative Instruction MEA – No. 12/2020 on Protected and Strictly Protected Species, relevant academic publications, as well as field research. The aim of this study is to identify and systematize endemic species with a limited distribution within the territory of Kosovo, contributing to improved knowledge of biodiversity and supporting future conservation measures.
The assessment was conducted by the Institute for Nature Protection in cooperation with the Department of Biology of the University of Prishtina, and is intended to serve as a basis for further scientific and institutional assessments.
Kosovo is home to several endemic fauna species, particularly aquatic insects and spiders, which have been described and identified in recent years, demonstrating the country’s high level of biological diversity. These species represent an important natural value of Kosovo and require special protection to ensure their conservation for future generations.
The results show that Kosovo’s endemic fauna is closely associated with mountain habitats, aquatic ecosystems and protected natural areas, which provide important refuges for the survival and development of many species with limited distribution. In particular, rivers, water springs, lakes, caves and mountain forests are of great ecological importance, as they provide specific conditions for a considerable number of endemic organisms.
Many of these species are sensitive to anthropogenic changes, including habitat fragmentation, deforestation, water pollution, degradation of natural ecosystems and climate impacts. These factors pose serious threats to the long-term conservation of endemic biodiversity and may directly contribute to the decline of their populations.
Compared to previous studies, there has been an improvement in the documentation of certain taxonomic groups. However, significant data gaps still exist, particularly concerning invertebrate groups and organisms associated with aquatic and subterranean habitats. This highlights the need for continued scientific research, systematic field monitoring and strengthened conservation measures, with the aim of protecting biological diversity and preserving Kosovo’s unique natural values.
