06 February 2024

The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, through the Institute for Nature Protection in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Organization, Ecopana, representative of WWF Adria in Kosovo, has installed informational boards about the importance of Mirusha Waterfalls as a Natural Monument of special significance.

The purpose of placing these boards is to raise awareness among visitors about the ecological, scientific, aesthetic, cultural-historical, and tourist importance of the Mirusha Waterfalls.

The territory of the Mirusha Waterfalls protected area has rich biodiversity, with around 330 species of vascular plants, 44 species of higher fungi, numerous animal species, and dozens of rare aquatic insect species. The informational boards will contribute to informing visitors about these natural values and raising awareness for their protection and the sustainable development of this area.

Sami Behrami, head of the sector for protected areas within the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection, on this occasion declared that: "These signs are of special importance because those who visit Miruşa will be better informed about the value of the waterfalls and the natural potential that this area possesses. Due to these values, in 2012, by government decision, this area was protected as a nature monument of special importance with an area of about 600 hectares."

Meanwhile, Krenare Salihu from WWF Adria stated: “We are committed to working to preserve the unique natural heritage of the Mirusha Waterfalls. By placing these signs, we hope to promote responsible tourism and contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources.” She further explained that the activity of placing informational boards was carried out within the framework of the project for the Protection of the Mirusha River Flow, which is supported by two organizations: The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Open Rivers Program (ORP), implemented by Ecopana/WWF Adria in cooperation with the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection, the Municipality of Malisheva, the University of Prishtina, and other relevant institutions.
