This study provides an overview of which sectors have the greatest potential for efficiency in reducing air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions in Kosovo. The study offers Kosovo a better understanding of which key sectors mitigation is most feasible in, as well as which measures and policy instruments can be used. The study aims to provide an analysis that can be used to create better living conditions in relation to air quality and the development of policy instruments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants.
For the realization of the study, the GAINS modeling tool was used, as well as data and knowledge from AMMK and other institutions, as well as baseline data from INASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis). The analysis concludes that the three main emission sectors that should be the primary focus for Kosovo to reduce its air emissions are as follows: Burning wood for residential purposes, Road transport with diesel, and Heat and power production. The air pollutants that are of primary interest in this analysis are PM2.5, NOx, SO2, and NMVOC.
This study will serve the authorities responsible for drafting policies for reducing air pollution and air emissions, as well as representatives from sectors that are the main sources of pollution such as Energy, Heating, and Transport, during the process of developing relevant policies, including: the Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan, Local Air Quality Action Plans, the Decarbonization Strategy, the National Energy and Climate Plan, transport policies, and other strategic documents in this field. This study will also be valuable information for donors, NGOs, projects, and other actors involved in the policy-making process for reducing air pollution and air emissions.
The study was carried out within the framework of the cooperation project between AMMK and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
