03 July 2025

Officials from the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency have participated in activities carried out within the framework of an international research project, which aims to assess the spread and ecological impact of the invasive species Procambarus clarkii (Louisiana Red Crayfish) in subterranean ecosystems in Europe.

This project, coordinated by Tetide APS (Italy) and supported by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), has included partners from: Italy, Croatia, Greece, Israel, and Kosovo, bringing together research institutes, universities, speleological associations, and organizations involved in limnological studies. Kosovo is represented by the Institute for Nature Protection, which coordinates activities at the national level.

The aim of the project is to study the spread of the invasive species Procambarus clarkii in subterranean ecosystems and to develop strategies for the management and protection of sensitive habitats, through:

Through participation in the activities of this project, the relevant AMMK, namely the Institute for Nature Protection, is contributing to the sharing of experiences in nature and biodiversity monitoring and to strengthening scientific cooperation on sensitive issues such as biodiversity protection and invasive species control.

The results of the project will serve as a basis for the development of environmental policies and public awareness strategies for invasive species.
