Endemic aquatic insects of Kosovo on postage stamps

30 September 2025

The Post of Kosovo, through its Philately department, on the occasion of World Rivers Day, has issued its newest postage stamp series "Endemic Fauna." The discovery and description of four new species of endemic aquatic insects in the territory of Kosovo represents a special achievement in the fields of natural sciences and biodiversity conservation. This discovery is the result of dedicated team work by entomology researchers, who, through a combination of field research and laboratory analyses, have managed to identify these rare and very important organisms. In addition to their scientific value, these findings also serve as a call to raise awareness about the protection of fragile aquatic ecosystems in Kosovo.

Rhyacophila siparantum – was discovered in 2021 in a stream in the village of Bogë in Peja. This species plays an important role in water purification, and as such also faces the risk of extinction due to habitat degradation from infrastructure construction. Its name is related to the old name of Peja.

Tinodes lumbardhi – was discovered on a branch of the Lumbardhi River in Deçan in 2025. It has been found with only a few individuals, as a result of heavy river pollution. Its name is directly related to the river where it was identified, emphasizing its ecological role.

Drusus dardanicus – was discovered in 2015 in Bollosicë of Podujeva and later in several branches of the Llap River. This species is threatened by deforestation and the degradation of source areas. Its name comes from the ancient city “Municipium Dardanicum,” while its main function is related to maintaining the cleanliness of water sources.

Potamophylax kosovaensis – was discovered in the Bajgora area in 2025. Their low number reflects the numerous pressures on the environment in that area. Its name refers to Kosovo, directly linking it to the country where it was found.

The Post of Kosovo, through postage stamps, supports the protection of endemic fauna and at the same time promotes the wealth of the Republic of Kosovo to the world.
