Since 2011, Kosovo has been a member of the European Network for Environmental Information and Observation (Eionet) of the European Environment Agency (EEA), reporting and contributing with environmental information and data on the state of the environment in Kosovo, which, together with those of other member and cooperating countries, become part of the in-depth analyses concretized in the five-year European environment report. The same practice has been followed in the 2025 report on the Environment in Europe, but with innovations regarding the way of conception, structure, communication tools, publication of the findings and results of the report, messages that the report should convey to the public and policymakers, etc.
An integral part of the Environment in Europe 2025 Report are also the Profiles of the EIONET network member countries (32) and cooperating countries (6), including Kosovo.
In the profile of the report, among other things, it is assessed that Kosovo is at a turning point towards environmental sustainability. It has made progress in renewable energy, the circular economy, and sustainable agriculture; however, challenges such as energy poverty, dependence on fossil fuels, waste management, and land fragmentation remain. Forests are an important source of carbon absorption, while the contribution of agriculture to pollution and emissions remains significant.
The energy transition is advancing with investments in solar and wind energy, as well as with the implementation of energy efficiency supported by EU funds and national programs. Reforms in transport aim for greener travel, while the circular economy, although in its early stages, is opening up through strategies and innovation. Public awareness and alignment with EU policies support this process, but to achieve climate goals and protect biodiversity, actions need to be scaled up across all sectors.
Afrim Berisha, Acting Executive Director of the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, declares that: "This report presents Kosovo's and its institutions' efforts to achieve goals related to the environment and climate and to strengthen the implementation of relevant policies, but it also aims to suggest the necessary reforms to achieve environmental sustainability."
History
The European Environment Agency (EEA) publishes a report on the state of the environment every five years, as stipulated in its regulation. Europe’s Environment 2025 is the 7th such report, published by the EEA since 1995. It provides reliable, science-based information on how to respond to the major and complex challenges we face, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and air and water pollution. The report has been prepared in close cooperation with the EEA’s European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet). It draws on the extensive experience of leading environmental experts and scientists from Eionet in the 32 EEA member countries and six cooperating countries.
