01 October 2025

The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency (KEPA) has continued research activities to monitor the invasive species Procambarus clarkii (Louisiana Red Crayfish) in the groundwater ecosystems of Kosovo.

After the research activity carried out in the "Flladi Cave" in Panorc of Malisheva, activities to monitor this invasive species in Kosovo continued in the Radavc Cave, where samples were taken to assess biological and chemical parameters and monitoring traps were set.

This activity is being carried out within the framework of an international project supported by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), with partners who are mostly research, speleological, and limnological organizations, and where Kosovo is represented by the Institute for Nature Protection.

The aim of the project is the study of the spread of the Red Swamp Crayfish of Louisiana in groundwater ecosystems and the development of strategies for the management and protection of sensitive habitats, including standardized scientific monitoring.
