07/09/2011-The European Environment Agency (EEA), in support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), has published the report titled Environment of Europe-An Assessment of Assessments.
The assessment has been prepared based on reports published by various agencies and organizations in Europe and beyond, as well as on reports produced by the European Environment Agency, therefore it offers a more comprehensive overview of the environmental conditions and challenges across the entire research region.
The report has also been published as a kind of support for the Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe 2011" which will be held in Astana (Kazakhstan) from September 21 to 23, 2011. This assessment of assessments focuses on the two core themes of the conference: water and integrated ecosystems, and the green economy.
Furthermore, the Report is an evaluation of the evaluation process and critically examines and analyzes assessments across the pan-European region. Thus, it provides a solid basis for identifying: the strengths and gaps in existing assessments, their findings, their regional characteristics, as well as suggesting ways through which these assessments can be improved to make them more relevant and serve environmental policies. The report is also characterized by including in the assessment process a broader range of thematic and geographic perspectives.
For the assessment of the evaluations presented in this Report, they have been identified and recorded in a virtual library with over 1000 environmental assessment reports, with the support of experts from all 53 UNECE countries and experts from international organizations. More than half of these reports have been reviewed in detail - focusing on water resources and relevant ecosystems, as well as on the green economy. The Report is of particular importance for Kosovo, due to the fact that within the assessment of the assessment, Environmental Assessment Reports from Kosovo were also used, which have been posted in the virtual library of publications of the European Environment Agency (http://aoa.ew.eea.europa.eu/virtual-library-viewer).
