KEK invests 25 million euros to reduce pollution
09 September 2011
09/09/2011 - Investments of around 25 million, which the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) plans to make in the filter system of the Kosovo A Power Plant blocks, are worrying residents of the Municipality of Obiliq, who fear that with these investments the Government of Kosovo is trying to extend the life of this power plant, which is also the largest polluter of the environment due to its outdated technology.
Although the officials of KEC declare that these investments are not intended to extend the life of the Tc Kosova A blocks, the mayor of the Municipality of Obiliq, Mehmet Krasniqi, while welcoming every investment aimed at improving the environment, says that the idea of keeping this power plant operational is very concerning for the residents of his municipality. He says that the process of closing this power plant is accompanied by a lack of transparency and demands that at least the Municipality of Obiliq be informed about this issue.
Naturally, as a municipality we welcome any kind of investment in this direction, that is, investments related to improving environmental conditions. However, it seemed interesting to us that we are dealing with a multi-million investment and it raised a suspicion that the position may have changed, which had been that within five years this power plant would be shut down, which poses a very big problem for the residents of Obiliq, says Mayor Krasniqi.
However, despite the fact that KEK officials declare that these investments are not intended to extend the life of Tc Kosova A, its closure will not be able to be realized as requested by the Linking Office of the European Commission in Kosovo, which had planned for the closure to be completed in 2015.
