Sharri Mountains National Park part of the Dinaric Arc Parks project

03 February 2012

03.02.2012. Sharri Mountains National Park will be part of a three-year project for the Dinaric Arc Parks. The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency is a partner in the implementation of this project, which is being carried out by WWF Mediterranean (World Wide Fund for Nature for the Mediterranean) with the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the MAVA Foundation.

The project aims to form a network of National Parks and Nature Parks in the Dinaric Mountains Arc. Within this network, it is planned to organize conferences, study visits, and exchange of experiences in the field of NATURA 2000, Ecotourism, and fundraising for nature protection. The project will involve about 80 protected areas from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Macedonia, while Albania will have the role of observer in the first year of the project. The first meeting of the project coordinators and other actors involved in the project is expected to be held in April of this year.

The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, through its units such as the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection and the Directorate of National Parks, expects to gain experience from this project in the management of protected areas in general and national parks in particular. Also, this is a good opportunity to deepen regional cooperation in exchanging best practices in nature protection and in benefiting from European Union funds for nature protection.
