Migratory birds and humans – together through time

14 May 2012

14.05.2012 - Under the motto “Migratory Birds and People – Together Through Time,” the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, in cooperation with the Bird Protection Association “FINCH,” commemorated World Migratory Bird Day.

Activities on the occasion of this event began on May 13, when the NGO “FINCH,” based in Prizren, organized an outdoor trip/birdwatching at Breznes Lake in the Municipality of Dragash.

The main event was organized today in the Conference Hall, in the New Building of the Government of Kosovo (the former Rilindja media palace), where the book “In Search of the Birds” by authors Nexhmedin Ramadani and Ismet Lecaj was also promoted.

Under the motto “Migratory Birds and People – Together Through Time,” representatives of governmental and non-governmental environmental institutions have delivered messages aimed at raising public awareness about the essential connection between birds and humans.

The CEO of AMA, Dr. Ilir Morina, on this occasion stated that birds are important indicators of the environmental quality of a country, and therefore, information and knowledge about their distribution are necessary for everyone. Likewise, nature and biodiversity protection are closely linked to bird conservation. The Birds Directive is one of the main pillars of the European Union’s legislation on biodiversity, and thus, to implement it effectively, we need reliable scientific information.

Meanwhile, the authors of the book, Nexhmedin Ramadani and Ismet Lecaj, have appreciated that this publication, besides offering information about most of the wild birds of Kosovo, also provides original photographs of the birds taken in their environments by the authors themselves. All of this is skillfully intertwined with poetry dedicated to these birds, which makes the book appealing and easy to understand not only for adults but also for children. Other participants in this promotion have also highly valued this publication, describing it as rare and unique.

World Migratory Bird Day is observed worldwide with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of birds. The message conveyed this year by the observance of this event around the world aims to show that when someone truly begins to think about the cultural, social, historical, economic, and spiritual connections we have with the world of birds, it becomes clear that birds and humans have created inseparable bonds in many different ways and at different levels.
