06 February 2013 06/02/2013-Life without Kosovo A is the theme of a drawing-painting competition, in which students from 6 primary schools from the Municipality of Obiliq and that of Fushë-Kosovë participated, as part of a campaign to raise awareness and sensitize public opinion on environmental protection from pollution caused by thermal power plants. The campaign was initiated and supported by the European Union Office in Kosovo. Out of a total of 500 works that participated in the competition and were also presented on the Facebook profile facebook.com/jetapakosovena, 24 of them were selected and published in a catalog of works. Children were asked to express their vision for the future without the Kosova A Power Plant through drawings and paintings.
The blue sky, the green landscapes, parks with flowers and trees, clean rivers, wind turbines, happy children growing up in a clean environment, are the images that students would like to see in the future instead of the smokestacks emitting smoke, ash, gray-colored sky, and polluted rivers. The main message that comes from children's imagination is that closing and dismantling the Kosovo A Power Plant will result in a cleaner environment and healthier life for everyone. In fact, children's vision for life without Kosovo A is not unachievable and can very easily become a reality. The closure of the Kosovo A Power Plant is planned to take place at the end of 2017 and is estimated to cost around 28 million euros.
The Government of Kosovo has now established three working groups for the decommissioning process of Kosovo A Thermal Power Plant, which is also the first phase of closing this power plant. The closure of Kosovo A TPP is also part of the obligations that Kosovo has undertaken under the Energy Community Treaty and is also planned within the framework of the 2009-2018 Energy Strategy approved by the Assembly of Kosovo.
