15/04/2013-The Dukagjin region, and especially the city of Peja and the mountains surrounding it, are key reference points for international tourists visiting Kosovo. This interest primarily arises due to the enchanting beauty of the Accursed Mountains, most of which extend into the Municipality of Peja.
Thanks to this tourism value, the Municipality of Peja had earlier reached the finals as a world tourist destination alongside 3 other countries. In the competition that also included Singapore, Bhutan, and Dubai, the World Tourism Organization selected Peja as the winner with the project Balkans Peaks Tourism Tomorrow Award with a 192 km long trail, which includes tourist signage and mountain sports recreation.
The importance of this victory, as the most preferred tourist destination, is that the tourist potentials of the city of Peja are being promoted around the world, which shows the seriousness of this municipality in promoting the natural beauties, tourist resources, and cultural heritage of this city.
Thanks to this race, which was held in Abu Dhabi, the Municipality of Peja will have the opportunity to continue promoting its ecotourism values. In service of the further development of ecotourism in this area, there is also the fact that the Accursed Mountains now have the status of a National Park, which will be an additional incentive for global tourists to visit this region. The commitments of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, specifically the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, with the establishment of the Directorate for the Accursed Mountains National Park, are another effort that will help in promoting the tourist and natural values of these mountains.
