Kosovo marks progress in the preliminary assessment by the European Environment Agency on the flow of priority data

29 April 2013

29/04/2013 - The European Environment Agency has made the preliminary assessment of the flow of priority data in the European Environment Information and Observation Network for the period May 2012-April 2013. This is the second consecutive year that Kosovo is included in the assessment of the flow of priority data in EIONET. Unlike last year, this year it has shown progress in the ranking and has been ranked 10 places higher. In this preliminary assessment, the data reported on river water quality, groundwater quality, and air emissions have been taken into account.

The preliminary assessment precedes the final Report on the flow of priority data, which is usually carried out once a year by the European Environment Agency and aims to evaluate the progress made in the data flow, to identify the problems that countries have with the data flow, as well as to encourage them for better performance.

Ensuring high-quality data in the European Environment Information and Observation Network - EIONET is one of the fundamental objectives of the European Environment Agency. To achieve this objective, it aims for this data to be provided on time, to be relevant, and reliable. The participation of Kosovo, specifically the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, in the activities of the European Environment Agency has been enabled within the framework of the IPA project Participation of Western Balkan Countries in the work of the EEA. Kosovo was first involved in this project in 2010, to continue with the second phase of the project, which will continue until the end of 2013.

The project is implemented within the framework of preparatory measures to support candidate and potential candidate countries in the European integration process, with a particular emphasis on supporting the Environmental Protection Agencies of the Balkan countries in their participation in activities organized by the European Environment Agency. The main goal of the project is to support the Western Balkan countries in all key activities planned in the work program of the European Environment Agency-EEA and the European Environmental Information and Observation Network-EIONET.
