Proposal for the Declaration of Henc Wetland – Specially Protected Area, for Public Discussion
05 August 2013
05/08/2013 – The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, namely the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection, within the framework of the Work Plan for 2013, has prepared the professional proposal for the declaration of Henc Wetland – Specially Protected Area.
The objectives aimed at by the declaration of Henc Wetland as a Specially Protected Area (SPA) are: Sustainable use, ecosystem protection, implementation of measures for the restoration of damaged ecosystems, rational use of natural values, increasing opportunities for scientific, educational, cultural, and professional research and activities in accordance with contemporary concepts in the development of this area.
The Henc Wetland is a fairly rich area in terms of zoodiversity. According to research, it has been observed that a large number of wildlife species live in this area, with the greatest number being represented by wild birds, which is what makes this area notable. The natural habitats of the Henc Wetland and its surroundings provide shelter for many species of birds, many of them rare species with an unfavorable conservation status in our country and in Europe. The number of bird species recorded so far is 78 species, but it is believed that this number could be much higher considering that, until now, no systematic and professional research has been conducted at a comprehensive level for this area.
The public discussion on Special Protected Areas is foreseen according to the Law on Nature Protection (No. 03/L-233) Article 20, paragraphs 4, 5, 6, and 7. The period of the public discussion will last from 06.08.2013 to 06.09.2013.
