18 March 2014

18.03.2014- The Government of Kosovo, in its regular meeting today, has approved the decision to declare the Henc-Radeva Marsh a Special Protected Bird Area. The Special Protected Bird Area Henc/Radeva Marsh is protected as an entire spatial unit due to special natural values and characteristics such as: ornithological, ichthyological, hydrogeological, botanical, and landscape. The area covers a surface of 109 hectares, 52 ares, and 35 square meters, and extends over the territory of the municipalities of Graçanica, Lipjan, and Fushë Kosovë.

The professional proposal for the declaration of this area was prepared by the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, specifically the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection. The objectives aimed at by the declaration of the Henc Wetland as a Special Protected Area (SPA) are: sustainable use, protection of the ecosystem, taking measures for the restoration of damaged ecosystems, rational use of natural values, increasing opportunities for scientific, educational, cultural, and educational research, and other professional activities in accordance with contemporary concepts in the development of this area.

The Henc Swamp is a fairly rich area in terms of zoobiodiversity. According to research, it has been found that a large number of wildlife species live in this area, with the largest number being represented by wild birds, for which this area is also distinguished. The natural habitats of the Henc Swamp and its surroundings provide shelter for many bird species, many of which are rare and have an unfavorable conservation status in our country and Europe. The number of bird species recorded so far is 78 species, but it is believed that this number could be much higher, considering that no systematic and professional research has been carried out so far at a comprehensive level for this area.
