The report on climate change warns: The world is heading towards a dark future

15 April 2014

The United Nations has published part of the report of the 5th Assessment on Climate Change. In the report that focuses on the Impact of Climate Change, Adaptation to climate change, it is emphasized that the world must now move faster away from fossil fuels.

The 33-page study, prepared within the framework of Working Group II, underlines that there must be a massive shift towards renewable and sustainable energy. The report was published after a week of negotiations and discussions among scientists and officials from the respective governments. Natural gas is seen as a key bridge to shift energy production away from oil and coal. But there have also been debates among officials, especially among those who will have to pay for this energy transition.

After preparing the final report on energy and climate change, participants stated that this report is merely a grim warning that the world is heading towards a dark abyss if immediate measures are not taken. Based on the growth of the global population and economic activity, it is predicted that the increase in land surface temperatures will be between 3.7 and 4.8 degrees Celsius by 2100, if immediate actions are not taken.
