11 December 2014 11.12.2014 - During the year 2014, within the framework of activities for nature protection, on the initiative of the Institute for Nature Protection, which operates under the Environmental Protection Agency of Kosovo, among other things, two decisions were also drafted for the protection of native domesticated animal species. During this year, through two separate decisions, the following were placed under protection: the Ilirian Dalmatian Dog breed, a native domesticated species, and the Kosovar Long-Tailed Rooster breed, a native domesticated species. The main purpose of issuing these decisions is the protection of these species according to the law and the determination of the conditions for keeping them. Additionally, through these decisions, it is aimed that these species are protected from the risk of genetic mixing with foreign breeds and from the risk of being taken out of the country for the purpose of crossbreeding with other breeds.
According to these decisions, both of these native species are registered in the register of protected natural values maintained by the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection.
The decision also contains the rationale for taking these species under protection as well as the description of their fundamental characteristics.
The preparation of the rationale for the native Illyrian Shepherd Dog breed was done in cooperation with the Cynological Association of Kosovo, while for the Long-legged Kosovar Rooster breed, it was done in cooperation with the Association for the Protection and Cultivation of Chickens.
