08.01.2015 – As part of activities for monitoring and inventorying biodiversity in protected natural areas, the AMMK, specifically the Institute for Nature Protection and the Directorate for the Administration of Sharri National Park, have installed monitoring equipment in the area of the Rusenicë strict nature reserve.
The placement of the camera trap was carried out in a part of this area believed to be a possible movement zone for wild animals, with particular emphasis on the lynx (Lynx lynx), for the preservation of which this nature reserve was declared back in 1955.
Trap cameras are devices with automatic triggers, equipped with a sensor that detects the movement of warm-blooded animals and photographs them at the moment they pass in front of the device. These devices are mounted on trees or special stakes. This method is non-invasive for studying wildlife, as it generates information regarding the presence and number of different species without disturbing them. This activity is also part of the project for the recovery of the lynx (Lynx lynx) in the Balkans, funded and implemented by the international organizations EURONATURE and KORA together with their local partners in Kosovo, which include the Institute for Nature Protection.
Four cameras were previously installed in the park with the help of the EURONATURE organization as part of the project for monitoring the lynx, and four others were installed two weeks ago with the support of the American University in Kosovo in several parts of the park with the sole purpose of monitoring the condition and presence of various species of wild animals, with a particular focus on finding the lynx.
From the side of this University, it is expected that around 15 more cameras will be installed soon, which overall is expected to cover a considerable part of the National Park's territory with these types of cameras that will provide sufficient data for determining the state of the fauna in this protected area.
