Hydrological situation in Kosovo and forecast

10 February 2015

10.02.2015 - According to the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, the intensive rainfall during these days is due to a cyclone coming from the northwestern part of the European Continent, which has also affected our country. The weather was accompanied by heavy rainfall, especially from February 4, reaching its peak on February 5 and 6, 2015, with more pronounced temporal and spatial distribution intensity particularly in the western and central parts of the Balkan Peninsula.

These rains have caused the rapid rise of water levels in the rivers of Kosovo, which are swift due to their mountainous nature, resulting in most of them overflowing and causing floods in some areas of the country.

The hydrological situation is almost the same throughout the territory of Kosovo, but it is more severe in the Sitnica River basin, affecting most of its tributaries from both sides, starting from the central part of the Kosovo field basin (Lipljan and its surroundings, Fushë Kosova, Obiliq, Vushtrri), etc.

The right branch of the Sitnica, the Llap River, is also affected in its middle course and especially in its lower course (Lluzhan, Lower Lupç), etc., flooding lands on both its sides.

Problematic are the mountain streams with torrent-like characteristics (rocks, small streams), etc., which due to the configuration of the relief, have a flash flood character, causing damage in some villages and urban neighborhoods in some areas of Kosovo.
