The presence of rare species of fauna continues to be witnessed in the territory of the Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park

26 November 2015

26.11.2015 - As part of activities for monitoring and inventorying biodiversity in protected nature areas, officials of IKMN-SN have carried out a field visit in the Decan Gorge, in the area of the village Bellaje, as part of the PK. Bjeshkët e Nemuna.

On this occasion, two trap cameras that had been set earlier were collected, one at the Bellaj krone and the other in a nearby area of the Bellaj pastures, which is believed to be a possible zone for the movement of a large number of wild animals, with special emphasis on the lynx (Lynx lynx) as well as the species that this rare animal feeds on.

After checking the cameras, it was found that the types of mammals that had been photographed included: Brown bear (Ursus arctos), Wild boar (Sus scrofa), Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), Red deer (Cervus elaphus), Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Wildcat (Felis sylvestris), Badger (Meles meles), and some other common species that were not clearly visible. From the presence of a considerable number of them, the relatively good condition of the fauna in this part of the park could be determined.

Camera traps are devices with automatic triggering, equipped with a sensor that detects the movement of warm-blooded animals and photographs them at the moment they pass in front of the device. These devices are mounted on trees or special stakes. This method is non-intrusive for studying fauna, as it generates information regarding the presence and number of different species without disturbing them.

Some such cameras have been installed for some time in different parts of the Sharri and Accursed Mountains National Parks, with the sole purpose of monitoring the state of the fauna and the presence of different species of wild animals. These cameras have so far provided reliable data on the presence of various species of wild animals in these protected areas.
