10 December 2015 10.12.2015- The weather that over the past week has affected Kosovo, especially its central part, has also influenced the air quality. As you have been informed through the Kosovo Hydro-Meteorological Institute, during these days in Pristina there has been weather with dense fog (visibility <30 m) and high air humidity over 85%, as well as a lack of wind.
Moreover, during this period, the amount of emissions of air pollutants such as industry, transport, and the consumption of solid fuels used for heating has also increased. As a result of this situation, the creation of smog (also known as London smog) has occurred, which is characteristic of the winter season, especially for the months of December-January. Under these conditions, it has been observed that the concentration of some air quality parameters such as PM10 has been higher, which has also affected that the air quality in Prishtina is unsatisfactory.
From the analysis of the results obtained from the automatic monitoring of air quality, it has been observed that during the monitoring period 01-09.12.2015, exceedances of daily limit values for PM10 were recorded. Seven days (cases) with exceedances of daily limit values were registered. While during one year, 35 days with exceedances of daily limit values are allowed.
In these cases, it is recommended that sensitive categories (people with respiratory system diseases) do not stay for long periods in such environments. Likewise, unnecessary vehicle movements should be reduced, especially in areas frequented by pedestrians.
