06 January 2016
06.01.2016 - The intensive rainfall during the last 24 hours is due to the cyclone coming from the northwestern part of the European Continent, which also includes our country. As a result of the intensive rainfall, starting from 05/01/2016 and reaching its peak on the 06th, with a more pronounced temporal and spatial distribution intensity, especially in the western and central parts of the Balkan Peninsula. This rainfall has caused a rapid rise in the water levels of the rivers in Kosovo, which are turbulent due to their mountainous nature, causing most of them to overflow from their beds, leading to flooding in some areas of Kosovo.
The rapid rise in river levels has also been helped by the synoptic situation, as today air temperatures of around +5 degrees C have been recorded, which have led to a more intensive melting of the snow layer that fell two days ago, the thickness of which in Prishtina reached 13 cm. According to forecasts from the IHMK, over the next 24 hours, there will be rainfall in lowland areas, while in mountainous regions there will also be snowfall. This synoptic situation will continue tomorrow, but with a lower intensity of precipitation, where there will be an average of around 10 mm of precipitation over 24 hours, whereas on the 8th there will be precipitation in short intervals, with the amount within 24 hours not exceeding 5 mm.
The synoptic situation over the next 3 days will be characterized by a decrease in rainfall intensity, which will be typical for lowland areas, while in the mountainous areas there will be light snowfall.
