20 May 2016
20.05.2016 - According to the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, rain showers of low intensity, which began during the morning of today (20/05/2016), initially in the western part of Kosovo, are expected to cover the entire territory of the country during the day. Their intensity is expected to be higher in the afternoon hours, covering the whole of Kosovo and more broadly the Balkan region.
The amount of rainfall within 24 hours in some areas is expected to reach around 50 - 60 mm (l/m2). Showers with varying intervals and intensity will continue also during tomorrow, 21/05/2016, reaching a total of around 80mm/48h.
From these rains, the water level in rivers, especially those with a mountainous character, is expected to be more forceful and faster, which as a consequence will initially cause floods as well as landslides, with sensitivity for the affected and more exposed areas: very high 17%, high 58%, moderate 11%.
Areas with a high potential for floods are the northern part of the country, specifically the flow of the Ibar and Sitnica rivers with their tributaries, then the eastern part of Kosovo, especially (Kriva Reka) with its tributaries, and the southern part, the Lepenci and Nerodimja rivers.
Likewise, local floods are also expected in some parts of Dukagjin, especially its northwestern part (Peja Bistrica, Deçan) with some of their tributaries, and the southern part of Dukagjin (Prizren Bistrica, Toplluha, Mirusha, etc.).
Rainfall is expected to stop during the evening hours of 22/05/2016.
