Scientific research on the Storks of Kosovo!

24 June 2016

24.06.2016 - On the initiative of the Center for Environmental Education and Research in Kosovo - KEERC, experts from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology from Germany, in cooperation with the University of Konstanz in Germany, the University of Prishtina, and the Institute for Nature Protection, are conducting training on the ringing of wild birds for the first time in Kosovo.

On this occasion, yesterday, the practical work on ringing six storks was successfully completed, as well as the installation of devices to track the movements and migration of three White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) individuals.

The location where this activity was carried out was near Lipjan, a place known for a large number of stork nests and at the same time technically supported by the company KEDS.

This activity, which will last until the beginning of next week, will also include the ringing of other types of birds that will be captured using different methods and aims to continue in the future.

Kosovo still does not possess its national code for ringing wild animals, but it is believed that procedures for certification with this code from the European Union for Ringing - EURING will begin very soon.
