01.12.2016 - In yesterday's plenary session, the Assembly of Kosovo, among other things, had on the agenda the review of the Annual Report on the State of the Environment.
After discussions and debates regarding the Report, it was noted that the Report presents the real state of the environment in Kosovo and that the recommendations and the data it presents are a good basis for taking measures and for drafting policies to improve the state of the environment.
Today, in the continuation of the session, the Assembly, alongside other decisions, approved the Report on the State of the Environment.
The drafting of the Report on the State of the Environment in Kosovo is based on the Law on Environmental Protection. According to Article 25 of this Law, the Government of Kosovo, upon the proposal of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, presents the Assembly with a Report on the State of the Environment. The Report is prepared by the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency.
Based on legal requirements, the Report contains data on: the state of the environment and environmental changes compared to the previous report, environmental impacts on public health, the state of endangered environments, the implementation of the Environmental Strategy, the Action Plan, measures taken for environmental protection, the use of natural resources, the development of environmental institutions, and the financing of the environmental protection system.
This annual Report presents the state of the environment mainly for the year 2015, but also includes earlier data for the purpose of comparison and trend presentation.
For the preparation of the report, data have been collected from the environmental monitoring system, from institutions responsible for producing data on specific environmental issues, from companies, operators, various enterprises, publications, reports, and other sources.
The purpose of this report, primarily, is to inform policymakers (the Government of Kosovo and the Parliament of Kosovo) about the state of the environment in order to encourage the development of adequate environmental policies and to guide developments, planning, and strategic investments in sectors that impact the environment such as: the economy, industry, energy, transport, agriculture, etc. Besides informing policymakers, the report also aims to inform the general public about the state of the environment in the country.
