18.12.2016 - Based on measurements carried out by the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, from the analysis of the results obtained from automatic air quality monitoring, it is noted that even in recent days exceedances of the daily limit values for PM10 have occurred.
The allowed daily limit value for the protection of human health is 50 µg/m3, while during these days the maximum value of the daily average was recorded on 17.12.2016, reaching the value of 55.87 µg/m3, whereas on 16.12.2016 the daily average value was 23.0287 µg/m3. From 17:30 on 17.12.2016, an increase in the values of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in the air was recorded, which worsened the air quality situation and continued in the following hours.
High concentrations were also observed with the pollutant PM2.5, which reached the maximum daily average value of 50.71µg/m3 on the same day and at the same location.
The weather conditions, which began in the afternoon of 17.12.2016 and continue today, present an unfavorable situation for the dispersion of air pollutants and lead to a deterioration of air quality, because in these cases, when a temperature inversion occurs and there is no movement of air currents, which implies a calm air condition, the pollutants emitted into the air from motor vehicles (transport), industry, incinerators, and the use of fuels for heating homes (in the winter season) cause these pollutants to accumulate in the lower layers of the troposphere and not disperse into higher layers of the air.
Under such conditions (during the winter season), the concentration of pollutants in the air is higher in all areas where such atmospheric conditions occur, compared to cases when atmospheric conditions are suitable for the dispersion of pollution.
