Camera traps record some rare types of wildlife in the National Parks

20 January 2017

20.01.2017 - Within the framework of regular activities for monitoring and inventorying biodiversity in protected natural areas, the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection also during 2016 continued carrying out the activity of placing camera traps in protected natural areas, specifically in both National Parks, Sharri and the Accursed Mountains.

This method of monitoring and studying wildlife, initiated last year, is a non-intensive method as it generates information regarding the presence and number of different species without disturbing them, even though the purpose of carrying out this activity here has only been to record the presence of species without entering the quantitative aspect, which is expected to be carried out in the future.

During this joint activity with officials from both National Parks and, in some cases, in cooperation with representatives of the Environmental Non-Governmental Organization ERA based in Peja, trap cameras were installed mainly in areas believed to be possible zones of movement for the largest number of wild animals.

The results collected from the trap cameras have provided very valuable information on the presence of some rare and endangered species of fauna in the monitored locations, such as the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos), Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), Wildcat (Felis sylvestris), Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Pine Marten (Martes martes), Hare (Lepus europaeus), Badger (Meles meles), Wild Boar (Sus scrofa), Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), Capercaillie (Bonasa bonasia), etc.
