07 June 2018

05.06.2018 - On the occasion of June 5th - World Environment Day, AMMK organized a cleaning campaign in the tourist area of Brezovica at DAPK 'Sharri'. Students from the Lower Secondary School 'Osman Mani' from the village of Firaje in the Municipality of Shtërpce also joined the campaign. Together with the AMMK staff and the chief Ilir Morina, the Deputy Minister of MMPH, Mr. Aleksandar Spasic, was also present at this activity.

The motto for marking this event for this year is 'Let's Fight Plastic Pollution.' The whole world has united to fight plastic pollution, especially single-use plastics. In the United Nations message dedicated to this day, everyone is called upon to take concrete action against plastic pollution. 'Let's Fight Plastic Pollution' aims to encourage governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together and find sustainable alternatives, urgently reducing the production and pollution of single-use plastics that harm the environment and threaten human health.

Kosovo is also facing pollution from plastics, especially from the use of single-use plastic bags and other plastic packaging. It is estimated that, as part of the overall composition of waste, plastic accounts for about 12% of the total. The lack of a plastic recycling system has caused it to be widespread everywhere as a polluting substance, especially in rivers. World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5, is an opportunity for people around the world to think about the negative effects of environmental destruction, both locally and globally. There are many international environmental issues that require urgent attention, such as Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Environmental Safety, which affect the health of our planet, its inhabitants, flora, and fauna.

The commemoration of this event dates back to June 5, 1972, when the UN held the first environmental conference in Stockholm, Sweden, where the "Human Environment Manifesto" and the "Action Plan" were adopted. According to the proposals of the Stockholm conference, in October 1972, the 27th United Nations General Assembly decided to create the "United Nations Environment Programme" and officially designated June 5 as "World Environment Day".
