Monitoring of heavy metals in the air in Drenas and Mitrovica

13 June 2018

13.06.2018- Within the framework of the project "Capacity Development for Air Pollution Control" supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japanese experts, in collaboration with officials from the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, have installed equipment for measuring the concentration of heavy metals in the air.

Two of these devices have been placed in the city of Drenas and two others in Mitrovica. These devices will continuously measure the concentration of heavy metals in the air for two months. The analysis of the samples obtained from these measurements will be conducted in Japan. Afterwards, the obtained results will be compared with national and international standards for heavy metal concentrations in the air.

The city of Drenas has been chosen due to the activity of the NewCo Ferronikeli iron and nickel processing plant operating in this area, while the city of Mitrovica has been chosen because of the industrial waste deposits from Trepça Enterprise activities. This is just one activity within the framework of the JICA project for air pollution control, which is being implemented in Kosovo, with the main beneficiaries being the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, namely the Hydrometeorological Institute.
