10 August 2018 09.08.2018 At the request of the Institute for Nature Protection, in cooperation with the Kosovo Company for Distribution and Supply of Electric Energy (KEDS), platforms with stork nests were installed on several electric poles in some localities in the Municipality of Kaçanik. This joint action was preceded by the violent removal of stork nests some time ago by KEDS employees, with the reasoning that they pose a risk to the normal functioning of high-voltage power lines.
Otherwise, the installation of these nesting platforms, prepared by KEDS, with guidance and recommendation from IKMN, is practical in many European countries as well as in the region and aims to relocate the nest at least half a meter above the low-voltage power lines, avoiding contact of the nest materials with the wires. Before the platform was installed, there was the possibility of deviations in the power system, especially during the humid period of the year. One of the goals of this activity, besides creating conditions for the protection of this rare type of our fauna, is certainly also the promotion of a positive example to protect the white stork and its habitat.
