14 August 2020

14.08.2020 - Based on the importance of Strict Nature Reserves for the protection of natural values, rare ecosystems, and special species of flora and fauna, the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, specifically the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection, during the year 2020, within the framework of the project for marking protected areas, carried out the marking of Strict Reserves, which are part of the list of protected areas in Kosovo.

The project was implemented in the strict reserves that are located in the two National Parks “Sharri” and “Bjeshkët e Nemuna”, as well as in other parts of the territory of Kosovo, including the northern part of the country, and aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving natural heritage through the placement of official notices in these areas for the general public and for visitors and tourists.

Otherwise, Strict Nature Reserves are areas of land or water that are unchanged or very little changed and are dedicated exclusively to the preservation of untouched nature, scientific research in the field of biology, monitoring the state of nature, as well as education in cases where it does not endanger the free development of natural processes. Based on the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature – IUCN, Strict Reserves fall into the first category of protection. The Strict Reserves declared in Kosovo have numerous values, and any damage to them may be irreparable. Therefore, their protection is very necessary, because such values are important not only for the fact that they represent the basis of scientific information but also for cultural and historical aspects.
