The report on environmental indicators is published

08 December 2020

08.12.2020- The assessment of the environmental condition should be continuous and based on relevant data. It is very important that the state of the environment is monitored over a longer period in order to observe development trends in the environmental sector and impacts arising from development sectors.

One of the most acceptable and efficient ways to assess the state of the environment over a longer period is the use of environmental indicators.

Such an assessment highlights trends in the state of the environment, the pressures exerted on the environment, the driving forces that cause environmental impacts, as well as the effectiveness of environmental policies in improving the state of the environment.

Derivation now the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency has prepared annual reports on the state of the environment, and specific reports for environmental sectors such as air, water, waste, nature, etc., covering time periods from 1 to 5 years. Also, the data and indicators used within the assessment of the state in these reports and evaluations have mostly covered shorter time periods.

"Kosovo Environment 2020, Environmental Indicators Report" is the first publication of this kind that evaluates the state of the environment based on the national list of environmental indicators, which covers a longer time period.

In the preparation of the report, standard methodologies used by European Union organizations such as the OECD, European Environment Agency, EUROSTAT, and other organizations have been employed. Indicators have also been used, whose development and processing are based on methodologies defined by these organizations.

The selection and development of the indicators have also been adapted to the overall development situation in Kosovo and have been guided by the data available for the development of specific indicators.

We hope that this publication will serve as a good basis to assist policymakers in designing more effective policies, not only in improving the environment but also in preventing environmental impacts arising from developmental sectors.
