The impact of hot air masses from North Africa has worsened the air quality in Kosovo

24 June 2021

24.06.2021 - During the last two days, a worsening situation of air quality has been observed, particularly for Dust Particles PM2.5 and PM10, at several measuring stations managed by the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo.

A deteriorated air quality for the parameters PM2.5 and PM10 has been recorded especially at the stations in Prishtina (IHMK and Rilindja) and at the station located in the mountainous area of Brezovica.

AMMK clarifies to the general public that this situation has occurred as a result of the current meteorological conditions in which our country is situated. According to the meteorological data from IHMK, Kosovo is currently under the influence of hot air masses originating from North Africa.

The dust coming from this area of Africa, which also includes the Sahara Desert and has affected Kosovo, has contributed to the increase in dust particle values.

The carrying of dust and small sand particles from the Sahara is a phenomenon that often affects Europe and mainly manifests itself with the presence of dust particles in the air.
